Herculaneum was another place I’d never heard of until we signed up for this trip. It’s another town that was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption. The volcano’s effects here were different, as the lava carbonized, thus preserving wood structures, whereas you don’t find wood left in Pompeii.
Sadly, the town was originally discovered in the 1700’s by people digging and finding statues – they dug up statues without excavating. In doing so, they destroyed any information about where the statues were located in the original theater they had been part of and destroying much of the theater itself in their quest for statues.
