Death Valley 2012 – Day One – Bend to Reno

Today we struck out into territory we’ve never traveled; these are always exciting days. We traveled south to La Pine and turned east into, as the signs kept telling us, “The Oregon Outback”. A little hype but a very pretty drive. We traveled through low pine forest until the road took us out to grassland.

Off in the distance was Fort Rock. It really does look like a defensible position.

Continued on past Summer Lake and into Lakeview. Lakeview claims to be the highest city in Oregon. We had lunch. Nadya invoked the road trip pie rule and had lemon meringue. Jim scoffed, but still helped polish it off.

It was a good thing Lakeview had food. On the drive from La Pine to Lakeview there wasn’t a single grocery store. There are a few gas stations where you can get chips and a Coke, but clearly folks who live in the Oregon Outback have to stock up.

Into northern California on Highway 395. Somewhere along the way we saw a derailed sawdust car. It must have been a recent accident since it hadn’t been cleaned up. We were surprised there was only one car and a large section of damaged track.

In Reno we stayed at The Atlantis Resort. Nice rooms, plenty of hot water and cheap. Nadya and I both won big at the slots. We got four free martinis and we were up almost 20%! It worked out to almost $4 which is what we tipped the bartender.
